Drawing directly from life gives an artist a close connection with the subject. When that subject is a person and when the work is made in a single session - when feelings are to the fore and the intellect perhaps takes a back seat, the work can gain a real warmth and intimacy.

These drawings, often made with a lightness of touch, are a celebration of the subject and of light fleetingly falling across it.

Winter 1971/72

I had left St Martin's School of Art back in the summer and, thanks to a couple of friends, I was offered the use of Railway Cottages - deep in the forest in Norfolk . . . rent free!

The deal was that I was to live there and keep the place warm, and I was to vacate it occasionally - when some Railway Cottages partners wanted to stay.   On these occasions I would head off north on my moped to Cley next the Sea.   My residence at Railway Cottages may have also been dependent on a few other little details like keeping the place clean and tidy.

 An edition of 50. Printed (in 3 colours), signed and numbered by the artist in 1991 at Lowick House Print Workshop, Cumbria, UK on John Purcell 285gsm mould-made 100% rag paper.

In 1991 T.B. created a big light box for me on which I could make drawings (on True Grain) for my plate lithographs. This drawing of T.B. was made on delivery day . . . to try it out. I am pleased to say that the light box is still working beautifully.
