Charcoal on linen prepared with white acrylic primer and ground-down charcoal

Living in an isolated cottage in the middle of the huge forest at Thetford, Norfolk in 1971 was a thrilling experience. My passion for woodlands is still with me and, in recent years, trees have become central to a good deal of my drawing and painting. 'Siding' (vi) depicts birch regeneration in the harsh environment of abandoned railway lines. In this drawing I am enjoying exploring the wonderful relentlessness of the natural world.
