This painting is one of a number of studies for a much bigger painting (with 36 windows) which I'm currently working on. In all these paintings we are looking at the facade of a building, perhaps a hostel or a hotel, and it's evening. In this study two dozen windows are visible to us. Each has a blind - some blinds are open, some partly open, some closed, and some rooms have the lights on . . which means that we occasionally get a glimpse of an occupant. Who are they? What's on their minds?
I am thinking of these rooms as metaphors for the mind of the occupant . . or perhaps aspects of my own mind? In the bigger painting back in my studio some rooms will be cluttered and others organised, and some are bright and cheerful rooms whilst others are quiet sanctuaries. I'm hoping that, when finished, it will carry my wonder - a curiosity with and an awe at the lives of others. August 2026
