Painted in 1987 for the touring exhibition and book 'The Self Portrait : A Modern View'  -   curated by Sean Kelly (Artsite Gallery, Bath International Festival) and Edward Lucie-Smith.

Commissioned in 1986 by the National Science Museum for their Chemical Industry display.

 Dista Products, Liverpool were the first in the world, in 1982, to use genetically manipulated bacteria in the production of medicines. 'Contained Fermenter' depicts the vat in which they first grew human insulin.
