Siding (v)

Living in an isolated cottage in the middle of the huge forest at Thetford, Norfolk in 1971 was a thrilling experience. My passion for woodlands is still with me and, in recent years, trees have become central to a good deal of my painting and drawing. 'Siding' (v) depicts birch and ash regeneration in the harsh environment of abandoned railway lines. In this painting I am enjoying exploring the wonderful relentlessness of the natural world.

I hope this painting successfully carries my feelings of wonder at the lives of others - the depiction of imagined private lives with fleeting indistinct events in small simple rooms . . . all making for absorbing visual arenas.
